Effects of Trailing Edge Deflections Driven by Shape Memory Alloy Actuators on the Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Super Critical Airfoil

A smart structure to actuate a morphing trailing edge based on the super critical airfoil NASA sc-0714(2) was designed and verified in transonic wind tunnel. The pressure distribution over wing measured evaluate ability effects of deflections aerodynamic characteristics. In experiment, Mach number from 0.4 0.8, angle attack 0° 6°. results showed that shape memory alloy could carry loads under flow deflect edge. When driving force constant, deformation would be influenced by attack. Increasing weakened actuation capability structure, which decreased deflection rate influence is more complex, couples with number. higher number, stronger angles Additionally, dramatically change airfoil, such as shock wave position strength. If separation caused deflection, limitation further found.
